Meinklang - 2005/2006Region: Austria Size: 75cl This is a real treat of a white wine with a unique personality. It's refreshingly dry with not so much as a hint of oak but with lots and lots of minerally, zesty fruits instead. Tip-top! Awards and ReviewsJancis Robinson, The Financial Times 1/2/2006:Very cool, introvert and mineral-scented. Information about the Estate: Meinklang Vineyards Run by the delightful Werner Michlits, the Meinklang vineyards are to be found on the eastern side of Neusiedlersee in eastern Austrian close to the Hungarian border. Long summer days allow for the best physiological ripeness, whilst cool evenings give the grapes ‘resting’ time. Vineyards planted close to the lakes have high atmospheric humidity combined with warm air, the ideal conditions for Austria’s world-famous sweet wines: eiswein, or ice wine. With its clear flavour and well-balanced acidity, it is made from grapes picked when temperatures plummet below freezing. back to top ChardonnayJean Bousquet - 2006Region: Mendoza, Argentina Size: 75cl Alcoholic Content: 13.5% If you've a preference for the shrinking violet style of unoaked chardonnay, this probably isn't one for you! However, if you enjoy the rich intensity that oak ageing can deliver then look no further. Lashings of creamy pineapple with a melted butter finish are hard to miss whilst are kept well in-hand by perfectly placed acidity. Delightfully indulgent. back to top DOC Friuli Grave Pinot GrigioMont’albano - 2005/2006Region: Veneto & North Eastern Italy Size: 75cl Friuli-Grave sits to the north of Venice and here, the marginal growing conditions make for grapes with plenty of character and balance. The resulting wine has a rose petal nose with pears and apricots too. back to top Adobe SyrahEmiliana Orgánico - 2004/2005Region: Chile Size: 75cl This wickidly good Chilean syrah is full of spicy black cherry and plum fruits. Hearty but not in the least overpowering its extremely well made. Awards and ReviewsPeter Richards' top new Colchagua releases 22/2/2007: "Perfumed and gutsy Syrah at an excellent price. Drink now." Jancis Robinson, The Financial Times 7/6/2006:The other day, I managed to taste almost 60 different Chilean Syrahs…….by no means an exhaustive selection of those currently available in the UK…and perhaps the best value of all, the organic Abobe Syrah 2004 DOC Montepulciano d'AbruzzoJasci - 2005Region: Abruzzi & Marche, Italy Size: 75cl When produced with an eye on quality, not quantity there's no doubt the montepulciano grape is capable of producing really delicious, velvety red wines such as this. Vibrant purple with satin-textured bramble, black cherry and wild berry flavours. Utterly delicious. back to top ZinfandelBarra Estate Vineyards - 2004/2005Region: California Size: 75cl The Californians are so passionate about 'their' grape that they even have an entire website - www.zinfandel.org - devoted to it. Of course, you are very welcome to visit the site to learn more about this fascinating grape, but on balance it's a much better idea to buy a bottle of this and try it yourself. Beautifully made, with perfectly ripe black, coffee-scented hedgerow fruits and a long, smooth finish Awards and Reviewswww.spittoon.biz 1/1/2006:A full aroma of black fruits, spices and baked-cake nuances. A big – huge – palate of coffee-edge ripe black fruits. Tannins are finely grained… Red fruits and coffee on the lingering finish. Juicy acidity keeps the sweet fruit in check. | |
